Tom Walsh

Seats Held: Braintree District Council, Coggeshall Ward, Coggeshall Parish Council, South Ward

Tom Walsh is an ex-Town Planner and project manager and recently worked in International Education. As a director of the McDougall Trust he supports research into electoral reform and more proportional forms of voting.

Tom has been married for over 30 years and has 2 grown up daughters. He previously lived in London and has worked abroad and then chose to move to Coggeshall given its history, beautiful setting and sense of community.

He is a longstanding Parish Councillor in Coggeshall where he helped to re-vamp the Street Market. On the parish council he focuses on planning and finance and also helped set up the Coggeshall Neighbourhood Plan which is due be adopted in 2021 after 5 years work by a committed group of volunteers.

Tom has worked with other councillors, local community groups and residents to oppose the so called ‘Garden Communities’ at West Tey and West of Braintree which have now been rejected by the Local Plan Inspector. He is now working with colleagues to oppose plans for the waste incinerator at Rivenhall Airfield and huge quarry extensions which threaten to industrialise the local countryside.
He campaigned successfully against turning part of the Honywood School site into executive housing.

Tom believes that Coggeshall, Bradwell and Stisted do need small scale and genuinely affordable housing so our children aren’t forced to move away. This needs to be supported by community transport, new cycle routes and footpaths.

Tom was elected to Braintree District Council in 2019 as an Independent councillor and on the principle of ‘Local Voices, Local People & Local Issues’.
